The Supernaturalist, Eoin Colfer. Cycle 21 Reading Response, 63-78

Summary:
I read pages 63-78 The Supernatrualists exited to the top of the roof using the elevator. They used bridges that could retract from special kits they carried to get from roof-top to roof top, till they reached their destination. Their destination was the apartments that crashed into each other when they were being moved. Cosmo could see the parasites swarming in the direction of the apartments. When they reached the appartments they used their bridges to get into one of the buildings. They entered the building, Stefan and Mona were blasting parasites with great accuracy. Cosmo was just following he didn’t really shoot any, because he was thinking about how they were living things, but then Stefan reminded him what they did and how they sucked the lives of the so many victims. Ditto didn’t shoot any because he was a pacifist, so instead he would go around healing the injured. Lawyers started to storm the building. Lawyers instead of working in court room and such, they work in the field capturing anyone that tries to leave the scene of crime. The lawyers chased after the group, but they made it away safely.

Virulent-bitterly hostile
Forestall-prevent or obstruct an anticipated event or action by taking action ahead of time

One thing I don’t really like about the book is how in a way it kind of rushes through things too fast. It seems like it doesn’t give you as much scenery detail as you would want. I feel like things and events are happening too quickly. In a way I wish it would maybe slowdown and go into more details with certain events. I think the author made it like this to show how Cosmo’s life if rapidly changing and all these events are happening so quickly to him.

The Supernaturalist, Eoin Colfer. Cycle 20 Reading Response, 48-62

Summary:
I read pages 48-62. Stefan invites him to join their group of Supernaturalists. Stefan calls the group a family. Though Stefan used the word lightly, but to Cosmo this was a very big deal. Stefan explains what he knows about the parasites(the blue creatures) so far. The parasites hate water and suck the life force from people who are injured or dying. The parasites population keeps growing and growing each day, the Supernaturalists feel like they are barely even leaving a dent in their population each night they go out hunting. Mona will be the one who teaches Cosmo how to kill the parasites. Stefan heads to his mother’s gravesite. He questions himself on why is he doing this. He starts to get pressured by how everyone looks up to him to be the leader. He feels like he is getting no where with killing out the parasites. He knew what his mother would say, “Everyone you save is someone’s son, or someone’s mother. When you save them, you save me.” Mona wakes up Cosmos and tells him that the group was getting ready for a parasite hunt. Two buildings had crashed into each other when they were being moved around by a master satellite in the sky. She hand Cosmo a lightning rod and says, “Green button, prime. Red button, fire. Make sure the narrow end is pointing at the spooky blue creature. Got it? Good. Consider yourself trained.” Cosmo was surprised that he was being sent into combat with them so quickly.

Quote: “Everyone you save is someone’s son, or someone’s mother. When you save them, you save me.”
I think this quote is extremely important to the book. The Supernaturalists aren’t killing the bugs to save themselves they are doing this to avenge friends and family members that have had their lives sucked away by the parasites. It shows how though they may not be able to achieve revenge by killing them, they still can help to keep other people from feeling the pain they have felt from loosing people close to them.

The Supernaturalist, Eoin Colfer. Cycle 19 Reading Response, 32-47

Summary:
I read pages 32-47. Cosmos wakes up finding himself in some apartment to find the girl from the roof looking over him. The girl, Mona explained to him what happened and told him about how he had to go under major surgery by Ditto, the young boy from the roof. His body was morphed and changed like Frankenstein. His head was shaved and a metal plate was visible on his head. Mona told him how Ditto was a Bartoli baby. Bartoli babies were from a genetic experiment ran by Doctor Ferdinand Bartoli who tried to create super humans. The Bartoli babies had a growth defect, so even though Ditto looked like he was 6, he was actually 28. Cosmos quickly back to sleep, later waking up again to the apartment empty. He sat up and looked around the apartment, till the door bursted open with Ditto and Stefan (the other one from the roof) bearing a shopping trolley before them with Mona inside of it. Her skin was greenish tinge and she was shiver violently. Mona had been shot with a poisonous dart from the police. Cosmos used his expertise with being a no-sponsor tester and remembered what he had used to cure himself of it when they tested the dart on him back at the orphanage. Cosmos saved Mona. Afterward he was introduced to everyone. The three call themselves Supernaturalists. They hunt down the blue creatures that had attacked Cosmos earlier. He learned that he was a spotter; a spotter is someone that could see the blue creatures, they usually get this sight during a near death-experience.

Diary Entry #1:
Well I have never written a diary entry before, because they never really allowed us to have our own possession back at the orphanage, but I heard people write these to help direct their confusion and frustration out. Everything is weird, being out here in this new world. I have never been out of the orphanage before. These people that I have met, why are they hunting these creatures down? Why do they put their own lives in danger? I hope to get these questions, answered soon. I also wonder if I’ll be accepted by them. I have always been just forced to interact with someone else, never of my own free will. I hope that they accept me and don’t send me back to the orphanage. Well I don’t really know what else to write about, I hope to update this as make my way through this new world.

The Supernaturalist, Eoin Colfer. Cycle 18 Reading Response, 16-30

Summary:
I read pages 16-30, Cosmo and his friend Zipplock escape from the bus by twisting the guard, Redwood’s nose. They then quickly run to a nearby building. Redwood shortly after recovers from the pain and uses a tracking device to search after the two runaways. He plans to use shrink-wrap on them, which is a weapon that shoot a virus at the target and wraps them to tightly that is crushes all their rib bones. Redwood uses a tracking device that is no-sponsors are coated in when they take a shower. Redwood confronts the two on the roof. Zipplock pulls Cosmo and both fall about a story down onto the next building over. Their metal cuffs caused them to be electrified by an open wire. Slowly Cosmo dies, he can feel his heartbeat slowing down. Then a strange blue creature appeared that started to suck the life out of him. Then some mysterious kids showed up and killed the bug. They used a zapper to shock Cosmo heart back into a stable condition. They couldn’t save Zipplock though.

From the perspective of Zipplock:
I watched as Redwood approached me. My body was frozen with fear. I wanted to scream, run, do something, but nothing would happen. He grasped me by my suit and hung me over the ledge. I struggled to get free, but his grip was too tight. I looked over at Cosmo, his face filled with fear and helplessness. “Do your worst, Redwood!” I shouted, I can’t believe I just said that. The words just spilled out of my mouth like a dam with a crack in it. “I can’t get any more scared than I am right now.” Suddenly I felt something starting to tear. My suit slowly tore from its old age. I quickly grabbed Cosmo before fell down onto the other roof below. I slowly opened my eyes, warm blood spilled from the back of my head. My arm wracked with pain, most likely broken. I steadily got up and looked around, suddenly a blast sent me flying. My cuff had caught onto an electrical wire. My heart was slowing down. I could feel my heart beating a beat. My vision blurred as I slipped away into the next world.

The Supernaturalist, Eoin Colfer. Cycle 17 Reading Response, 1-15

Summary:
In these first 15 pages, you are introduced to a world of cruelty and torture for no-sponsors (orphans). In the futuristic satellite city no-sponsors are sent off to Clarissa Fraye Institute for Parentally Challenged Boys, where they are forced to test products like lab animals. In this place the only way out is through death, adoption, or escape. The book follows a fourteen year old no-sponsor named Cosmo Hill; each day he dreams that his real parents will come, but he knows that is a dream that will never come true and knows his only way out is escape. In these beginning chapters, they tested a new series of antiperspirants, by being spread with several different varieties of antiperspirants and being forced to run 10 miles with monitors attached to their legs. The next day they take a bus to a nearby facility to test another product. On their way home the bus crashes, will this be Cosmo chance to escape?

No words that I didn’t know.

The main character Cosmo is a really just let things happen type of guy. He doesn’t take action most of the time and just waits and hopes something good will happen. He kind of reminds me of myself. I really don’t like to take action and I usually just hope for things to go the way I want them to go. Like say in class I have this thing that I don’t understand, instead of raising my hand asking about it, I just wait and hope someone else who has a question like mine and wait for them to ask it themselves. My main reason for this my shyness and the fact that I don’t really want to put myself out there and be given the chance to embarrass myself. I think this could be the reason for why Cosmo acts like the way he does.
